Because of a favorite teacher in 7th grade I learned to love reading magazines thank-you Mr Wysong. And through that discovery of the larger discussion in the world I wanted to listen more to the news. The Watergate Hearings fascinated me.
In the 60s and 70s I recall endless discussions about education, our school systems, and population growth. It is hard to understand how good or bad an education is until you look back on it. Part of the problem is trying to structure a system that educates in a very rigid fashion when kids, as people, are so diverse. There is also a great disconnect of what I call the grey collar world which are a mix of blue and white collar skills.
Of course there was Watergate. I listened to people stand up and tell the truth and it seemed to cost, not just those people, but all of us so much. And yet ethics is a word that gets chuckles when people play Scrabble in Washington, DC. The fact that the city was built on a fetid swamp does not mean that only scum should thrive there.
There was the oil embargo. Cars lined up for blocks waiting to fill up. I lived in rural Maine and didn't see the cars backed up but on the news. I do recall being afraid that there wouldn't be enough gas for me to drive when it came time.
And I remember the counter culture revolution. I was too young to be involved in it much but it was something to watch. And from that I learned to love the ecology. Earth Day in 1972 we got out of school for the day to pick up trash along the road.
My dream, which I am now working on full time, is to live my own version of a sustainable lifestyle. I'm having so much fun dragging my wife kicking and screaming with me.
Another big issue back then was an unjustifiable war. The Vietnam War. The numbers of casualties are staggering, the blood is on our hands, and the numbers continue to climb in Vietnam as well as here in America. And blood is on our hands for many unjust excursions by our country. One death, regardless of nationality, is not worth one lie. It is a basic law and it applies to countries as much as it does individuals.
Anti-materialism. LOL, man talk about coming back with a vengeance. An entire industry has grown out of people needing, desperately to purchase, stuff. There are as many storage units as there are churches and car washes combined. In fact some could argue that storage units are in fact churches.
The music was great. Women, as always, were awesome and were an awakening movement. It was some part of a generation asking, and rightly so, where is it you all are taking us? And why do we all have to go that way?
I am a democrat. I am a liberal. I am an American. And given our history what should be an honorable statement is less so isn't it? I remember being proud and wanting to have integrity, character, and honor. What I learned is all that is for chumps.
It must be attributed to the internet that just a little research can reveal truth. I want so much for the truth to catch up to the nature of conservatism and that it may very well be the formula that causes the inevitable destruction of all dominating societies.
